When does banter cross the line?
Banter is a tricky topic when it comes to work, because one person's idea of fun can be another person's idea of harm. What we do know is that when left unchecked, banter can make your office a less inclusive place to be.
Our Comms & Creative Manager, Gigi, asked Harpreet Butoy, a spokesperson for D&I and mental health, 'how do you know when to intervene?'
Harpreet explained that there are a number of approaches you can take as a third party, depending on the scenario. Assessing the severity of the situation first is key.
For less serious cases, Harpreet explained that you can take direct action by pulling the instigator aside or calling them out directly. Although they don't have to be a manager, it's important that the person who takes action feels confident in doing so.
Talking about inclusive language at work can help to clarify the difference between harmful and helpful communication. We're always here to help, so feel free to get in touch if this is something your business needs.
Direct action isn't always necessary and every situation is unique, so we'd recommend listening to Harpreet's full interview by following the link below.
